communal viewings of horror films and decorations
H allo ween is without a doubt my favorite holiday.
The fall atmosphere, communal viewings of horror films and decorations riding on the border between creepy and hilarious all make for a truly entertaining and fun occasion. But the most notable aspect of this holiday — and my personal favorite — is the opportunity to dress up in costume.
Whether reflecting our personal tastes in pop culture or acting as beautiful works of art in and of themselves, Halloween costumes say a lot about us. Beyond just the aesthetic and personal value that they hold, however, lies an inherent political and cultural potential. For example, Halloween presents a unique opportunity for trans people to express their gender in ways that they might not otherwise be safe or comfortable doing during other times of the year. However, the political and cultural potential of dressing in costume is not always utilized in totally positive ways. Halloween costumes also unfortunately present an opportunity to perpetuate oppression.
One of the most recognizable ways that costumes uphold systems of oppression is through cultural appropriation. For those who may be unfamiliar with the term, cultural appropriation refers to the adoption of certain elements of a culture by outsiders who do not belong to that cultural group. This may sound innocent enough, but it more often than not plays out in harmful ways that promote stereotypes and other negative ideas about cultural groups.
Cultural appropriation is not merely educating oneself about aspects of different cultures, but rather partaking in very specific cultural practices that are not meant to be consumed and performed by those outside of that group. Examples of cultural appropriation around Halloween include dressing up as “Native warriors,” “geishas” and “hula dancers.”
I intentionally include quotation marks around these examples because in addition to uncritically picking and choosing over-simplified versions of cultural elements from groups of people, cultural appropriation also includes (intentionally or unintentionally) making a mockery of these elements and mass-producing them in ways that completely remove them from their original context. Putting on these simplified and decontextualized costumes reduces complex histories and cultural practices into something that can be simply put on and taken off by just anyone.
Some who put on these types of costumes do so while willfully ignoring the critiques coming from the cultural groups that the original practices or clothing belong to. Others may not be quite as active in silencing those voices, but rather claim that their intention is to emulate a culture rather than mock it. However, it’s impossible to look at this issue of appropriation through costume outside of its colonial and racist context. College junior Jade Huynh says that we need to recognize that oppression has historically been maintained by colonizers asserting the “complexity” of their own culture over the “simplicity” and “backwardness” of those who they oppressed.
“Given that culturally appropriative Halloween costumes are caricatures of the cultures that they aim to emulate, they’re a means of exercising control over them,” Huynh says. “In this mindset, white culture gets to be complex. It cannot be reduced to a certain type of clothing or mannerism. But ‘East Asian culture’ can be reduced to the geisha girl. Cultures can be bought and worn for Western entertainment.”
Although cultural appropriation may appear on the surface to be only a minor aspect of the structural issues of racism and colonialism, these supposedly small perpetuations of those systems are vital in holding them up. The pain and anger that come with seeing one’s cultural identity reduced and mocked in such a way cannot be easily described in words. But activists and community members, such as students involved with Ohio University’s “We’re a Culture, Not a Costume” campaign, are working on getting people to recognize the gravity of these issues and disengage from these practices.
Halloween is only a few weeks away, and many of us are currently figuring out what kind of costume we’re going to wear. I encourage all of us to utilize the potential of Halloween to express our genders, creativity and personalities through our costumes. But we must also be self-critical of what costumes we are considering this Halloween and make the conscious and political choice to not be complici t in perpetuating oppres sion.

The person who tricked Amanda Bynes
The person who tricked Amanda Bynes into flying to L.A. where she ended up in a mental ward is none other than the man who some say created life-threatening peril for a then-unstable Britney Spears.
TMZ has learned ... Sam Lutfi -- who Britney's parents say was recklessly medicating her before she was eventually strapped to a stretcher and taken to a psych ward in 2008 -- contacted Amanda Thursday and convinced her to sue her parents. He got her to fly to L.A. so he could hook her up with a lawyer.
Here's what Amanda DIDN'T know ... Lutfi was secretly working with Amanda's parents and it was all an elaborate ruse to lure her out so doctors could place her on an involuntary psychiatric hold.
We now have more clarification as to how Lutfi pulled it off. He told Amanda her car would be making 2 stops. First, to the lawyer's office in Pasadena and then to the London Hotel in West Hollywood where she would confront her parents and tell them about the lawsuit.
She never got to the London, because the driver went to a Pasadena hospital which looked like an office building. Amanda thought she was going to see the lawyer but when she walked inside she was surrounded by hospital staff.
TMZ broke the story ... Amanda was placed on a 72-hour psych hold which can be extended for 14 days. We're told during that time her parents will attempt to get another conservatorship.
Lutfi -- who has always said he was actually protecting Britney -- is a hero in the eyes of Amanda's parents. We're told they are going to publicly thank him.

Halloween Costumes for 2014
Halloween Costumes for 2014
Halloween is a widely celebrated holiday in America as every year, millions of people across the nation obsess over what costume to wear. 2014 will be no different as a great many new franchises and pop culture icons give inspiration to costume suppliers and individuals who create their own costumes alike.
In the past, Disney characters have been a very popular trend amongst Halloween costumes, as the famous princes, princesses and villains of Disney never seem to not be relevant. This year, in particular, Disney characters are destined to be filling the streets on Halloween night as the multi-billion dollar company has released two box office mega-hits since last Halloween. Last winter’s Frozen and the summer blockbuster, Maleficent are two titles that will, undoubtably, be heavily featured for Halloween 2014. Maleficent debuted at the box office with an impressive $170.6 million and Frozen has officially been named as the highest-grossing animated film of all time. With two immensely successful films released within a year, there will be twice the amount of Disney this Halloween.
Halloween stores, as well as individual costume creators, are notorious as of late for creating adult “sexy” versions of popular costume characters. There has been debate on the degrading factor of the recently released “sexy” Frozen costumes. Lingerie and costume company Yandy has announced their new line of adult costumes for 2014.
The lineup includes two versions of Elsa the Snow Queen, one resembling the original film’s sparkly blue gown, the other sporting a higher cut in the dress, revealing the legs, and a lower cut on the chest. The line also includes a sensual version of Anna with a similar color palette as the cartoon, but with a much shorter dress and short purple cape. Perhaps the most bizarre “sexy” adaptation is that of Olaf the snowman for adult women. The model photo for this costume features simply a white unitard with coal buttons printed on it, white forearm sleeves with prints of twig arms and a carrot nose to strap around one’s head.
Another debatable costume that has been announced is that of the woman who made viral news for allegedly implanting a third breast on herself. Yes, a full-on costume of this woman has been made and reinvented by popular costume sites like halloweencostumes.com. The costume features an attachable torso with three breasts and a three-breasted bikini top. The costume is being marketed as an outfit available for women and men.
The 2014 Halloween does not all have to be sexualized, though. There are already ideas circuiting the internet that will reflect more events and people of 2014 on Halloween night. A few of these suggestions include tributes to the late and great comedians, Robin Williams and Joan Rivers, a human recreation of the iPhone 6, the tall hat of Pharrell Williams or even striking a resemblance to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Individuals have also taken to creating their own simple, yet cleverly humorous costumes such as taking hundreds of grey-colored samples from Home Depot and going out as “50 Shades of Grey”.
Whatever costumes one decides to wear for Halloween 2014, there will most definitely be some difficulty in choosing from the immense amount of options this year. Though it may seem early to be thinking about Halloween, the season will creep up before one even knows it.

How to Choose Your Best Halloween Costume?
How to Choose Your Best Halloween Costume?
Women have a lot to think about when they head out shopping for Halloween costumes. For the most part men don’t seem to have the same concerns very simply because the costumes that are made for men are much more basic and much less revealing than ladies Halloween costumes. And really unless you are a woman who plans on dressing up in something really gruesome, chances are that you are going to have some part of your body exposed and selecting a costume is not something you should take lightly because selecting the wrong costume could leave you looking a bit silly to say the least.

Why We Love What Demi Lovato Does for Women’s Body Image
In fact, just a few days ago, she took to Facebook and reflected on the past six years that she’s attended theMTV Video Music Awards—specifically discussing how her body has changed during those years. She posted side-by-sides of herself on the red carpet and wrote:
“This picture makes me feel so many mixed emotions.. I remember the day I wore the dress in the very first picture. I remember asking for Spanx to flatten my stomach because I use to feel so heavy and ‘fat.’ Now looking at this picture, you can clearly see my hip bones. It makes me sad because I wasted so many years ashamed of my body when I could’ve been living the happy and healthy life I live today. It TRULY just goes to show you that your perceptions can lie to you. OR they can make you learn to enjoy life. Fortunately looking at the picture of myself in the red dress yesterday, I not only feel so grateful for the love and support I’ve had from fans, friends, and family, but…I also feel…beautiful. I’m so excited to live my life the way I deserve to and to the complete fullest. Thank you guys once again…I’m so thankful for my Lovatics. I love you… And never forget that staying strong is worth it.”
Demi has talked openly about her battle with bulimia and went head-to-head with Lady Gaga for “glamorizing” the disease when the singer enlisted a performance artist to vomit onstage. She’s also been vocal about her wish for a “real-body” Barbie—a doll with more realistic proportions (and it looks like her dream has come true!).
Promoting positive body image whenever possible? We say that’s a definite Do.
